Māori Comics

Māui Studios is a Māori comics studio producing kaupapa Māori, te reo Māori and bilingual comics end-to-end — script, art direction, illustration, lettering, print and digital. Our comics carry pūrākau into hands that use them: rangatahi in classrooms, whānau at home, and communities engaging with science, health, energy and cultural knowledge. We write with iwi partners and knowledge holders, illustrate under Māori creative direction, and typeset in te reo Māori with correct macron handling. Selected work includes Te Haerenga (a renewable-energy comic and pūrākau for Orion NZ), the Quantum Comix science-communication series, the Wrath of Quench science-education comic, and the Oraka Aparima cluster of animation and comics. Every commission includes rights and licensing structures that keep story ownership with the communities the pūrākau belong to.

Frequently asked

About Māori Comics

What makes a comic a 'kaupapa Māori comic'?
The kaupapa (purpose), story ownership, cultural authority, script direction and design language are all Māori-led — not just Māori characters or themes added to an external framework. Story owners retain mana over the pūrākau.
Do you produce te reo Māori comics?
Yes — fully te reo Māori, bilingual and English-language comics. We handle reo consultation, typesetting with correct tohutō, and printing at series scale.
Can you commission a Māori comic end-to-end?
Yes — from initial kōrero, concept and script through art, lettering, print production and distribution. See the Te Haerenga and Wrath of Quench case studies.
