Project Overview

Ko Māui Hangarau is a high-powered summit and events programme focused on technology, digital innovation, and entrepreneurship for rangatahi Māori across Aotearoa. The name pairs Māui - the legendary explorer known for audacity, daring, and innovation - with hangarau, the te reo Māori word for technology. The kaupapa is direct: awaken and ignite rangatahi passion for pathways into tech and digital sectors, and prove that you do not have to leave your culture behind to enter the digital space.

The programme runs on a simple, powerful philosophy: "If I can SEE success, I can BE success." Rangatahi meet Māori tech innovators, founders, engineers, creators, and digital sovereignty experts. They hear real journeys. They see what is possible.

Māui Studios Aotearoa Ltd designed the brand identity for Ko Māui Hangarau - the characters, the visual system, and the look and feel that carries the kaupapa across every summit, every stage, every digital touchpoint. The brand had to do a particular job: feel sharp enough to belong in a tech and innovation space, and grounded enough to feel unmistakably Māori.

Design Challenge

Two registers in one brand

Tech and innovation branding usually defaults to one of two looks: corporate sleek (clean type, minimal palette, no story) or activation-loud (bright, busy, high-energy event design). Neither was right for Ko Māui Hangarau. The brand needed to sit comfortably alongside tech founders, engineers, and VCs and carry the cultural weight of a kaupapa Māori rangatahi initiative - without compromising either.

That meant designing a brand that could hold sleek and organic in the same system. Brush-based te reo Māori wordmark with confident, modern layout. Character-led storytelling with a tech-sector register. Two visual languages, one coherent identity.

Characters that do real work

The programme runs on "If I can SEE success, I can BE success." That principle had to live in the brand, not just in the speeches. Characters - Māui and Waihiko - were the answer. Not mascots. Not decoration. Embodied figures rangatahi could recognise themselves in, named to carry meaning: Māui as the audacious explorer, Waihiko as the embodiment of electricity, current, and the digital flow.

The characters needed to feel like they belonged in the world of tech without losing their grounding in te ao Māori - and they needed to scale from a single summit poster to a long-running programme identity.

A brand that has to travel

Ko Māui Hangarau is not a single event. It is a programme - summits, partners, digital channels, education resources, ongoing rangatahi engagement. The visual system had to work across all of it without flattening into a logo and a colour palette. Brush, character, and layout all had to operate as a coherent kit, applied by different partners across different surfaces, without losing its character.

Design Response

Characters - Māui and Waihiko

Māui Studios designed Māui and Waihiko as the dual character anchors of the brand - one carrying the explorer kaupapa, the other carrying hangarau. Together they hold the title of the programme inside the identity itself: Māui (the figure) plus Waihiko (the current, the digital signal). Rangatahi meet the kaupapa through characters before they meet it through copy.

Character design balanced cultural grounding with a contemporary, confident register - designed to feel current to rangatahi entering the tech and digital sector, not pitched down or simplified.

Organic brush typography

The wordmark and core typographic system use organic brush styling - confident, hand-grounded, te reo Māori-led letterforms that carry the cultural weight of the name without defaulting to generic Māori visual language. The brush register signals that this is rangatahi-facing, kaupapa-led, and made by people who know what they are doing - not a corporate programme dressed in Māori motifs.

Sleek system design

Around the brush and the characters, the broader visual system runs sleek: confident layout, restrained palette discipline, modern composition. The contrast is the point. Brush and character carry the kaupapa. Sleek system carries the tech-sector credibility. Together the brand belongs in both rooms - the wānanga and the boardroom.

Designed to be applied

The system was designed for partners to use. Summit campaigns, education resources, social, stage design, partner co-branding with Toi Kai Rawa Trust and the Ministry of Education - the kit holds across all of it without breaking.

Project Outcome

Māui Studios delivered the full brand identity for Ko Māui Hangarau - Māui and Waihiko as the character anchors, an organic brush typographic system, and a sleek visual design system built for cross-format application.

The brand gave Ko Māui Hangarau a distinctive, culturally grounded, sector-appropriate identity capable of carrying the programme across summits, partner channels, education touchpoints, and digital deployment. Toi Kai Rawa Trust, Māui Studios, and the Ministry of Education share the kaupapa; the brand is the visual layer that holds it all together.

Impact Metrics

  • Support partner application - Toi Kai Rawa Trust, Māui Studios, Ministry of Education - without losing brand coherence

  • Continued application across subsequent summit cycles

Broader Impact

Ko Māui Hangarau makes the case that tech and innovation branding in Aotearoa does not have to choose between cultural depth and sector credibility. The brand sits credibly in tech and innovation contexts while staying unmistakably grounded in te ao Māori. For rangatahi entering the digital space, the brand is part of the message: culture and tech are not in tension - they belong together.

For Māui Studios, the project adds to a growing body of rangatahi-facing brand and IP work that operates at the intersection of culture, education, and emerging sectors - a category of mahi few studios in Aotearoa are equipped to deliver.

Future Opportunities

  • Extended character development - additional Māui and Waihiko storyworld content for digital and education contexts
  • Animated character assets - bringing Māui and Waihiko into motion for summit content, social, and online learning
  • Programme expansion brand kit - supporting future summits, regional editions, and partner-led activations
  • Education resource adaptation - character-led learning content aligned to tech and digital pathways
  • IP development - Māui and Waihiko as ongoing rangatahi-facing characters across Toi Kai Rawa and Māui Studios programmes
  • Merchandise and event environment design - extending the brand into physical summit experiences
