Outcome

A Māori Legend launched in Apex Legends Season 12 'Defiance' (February 2022) with cultural elements developed through genuine partnership - establishing Māui Studios as a cultural consultancy able to operate at AAA scale with a major international studio.

Project Overview

Māui Studios Aotearoa Ltd provided cultural and creative consultancy to Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts for the Apex Legends character Mad Maggie (Margaret Kōhere) - a Māori Legend introduced into one of the world's most-played games and voiced by Māori actor Nicola Kāwana. The engagement spanned the character's language, visual identity, and performance, working as an embedded cultural partner rather than a surface review at the end.

The collaboration ran across several connected workstreams: cultural and linguistic consultation on scripts and dialogue, design of the jacket patch art and chin moko, performance and animation support including a bespoke haka, and production documentation to support implementation.

The central challenge was to bring a Māori character to life in a global AAA title with genuine authenticity and care - ensuring linguistic accuracy and cultural appropriateness across a large body of dialogue, grounding the visual design in te ao Māori, and supporting authentic physical performance. A deeper challenge ran underneath all of it: representing a fierce Māori woman without reinforcing the "warrior race" stereotype that Māori have long been subjected to in media, and providing materials that were culturally safe - including a haka created specifically for the production rather than borrowed from any iwi (Brooks, 2022).

SOW Snapshot

Cultural and Linguistic Consultation: Weekly brainstorming and feedback sessions with the Respawn team; consulting on, editing, and adjusting more than 1,600 lines of dialogue for linguistic accuracy and cultural appropriateness.

Design and Art: Visual references for the base skin and additional legendary skins; the jacket patch art; and a chin moko design inspired by Tūmatauenga (atua of war) and featuring mangōpare (hammerhead shark) motifs, symbolising the strength of her heart and her undying will.

Performance and Animation: Workshops with the animation team - acting out facial expressions, hand gestures, and body movements for authentic cultural representation - and a bespoke haka created for the character, featured in the "Judgment" Stories from the Outlands trailer.

Documentation: A User Guide for the created content to support the Respawn team's implementation.

Client: Respawn Entertainment / Electronic Arts.

Outcomes

Māui Studios worked across language, design, and performance as a single, integrated cultural partnership rather than a set of separate sign-offs. The dialogue work kept te reo Māori and cultural references accurate across a large script; the chin moko and jacket patch gave the character a grounded visual identity carrying real symbolism; and the performance workshops and bespoke haka brought authentic physicality to the animation. The User Guide ensured the cultural content could be implemented correctly within Respawn's pipeline.

The work was recognised beyond the studio. Independent coverage situated Mad Maggie within a more careful, consultation-led approach to Māori representation in games, documenting that a custom haka was written specially for Respawn so the production had something culturally safe that did not borrow from any iwi, and noting the consultancy's clear awareness of the harm of the "warrior race" stereotype (Brooks, 2022). The result is a Māori Legend launched in February 2022 in one of the biggest games in the world, with its cultural elements developed in genuine partnership.

Impact Metrics

Intended Outcomes

  • Ensure Mad Maggie was represented as a Māori woman with authenticity and respect across language, design, and performance
  • Provide linguistically accurate, culturally appropriate dialogue across a large script
  • Deliver culturally grounded visual identity (chin moko and patch) and authentic performance reference
  • Equip Respawn to implement the cultural content correctly through a clear user guide

Broader Impact

  • Contributed to a significant moment for Māori representation in global gaming - a Māori Legend developed through consultation with Māori rather than without (Brooks, 2022)
  • Modelled how a fierce Indigenous character can be portrayed with nuance and cultural safety, navigating the "warrior race" stereotype rather than leaning into it
  • Demonstrated Māui Studios operating as a trusted cultural consultancy for a major international studio, at the scale of one of the most-played games in the world

Future Opportunities

  • Ongoing cultural consultancy for additional characters, skins, and narrative content
  • Cultural consultancy partnerships with other global game and entertainment studios
  • Expanded toi Māori design and haka or performance work for interactive media
  • A repeatable cultural-consultancy model and toolkit for authentic Indigenous representation in AAA games
