Māori Illustration

Māori illustration at Māui Studios is grounded in toi Māori and mātauranga Māori. Our illustrators work across editorial, comics, graphic novels, character design, brand identity, education and cultural exhibitions — always with permission structures in place for the whakapapa, motifs and pūrākau being depicted. We treat kōwhaiwhai, tukutuku, whakairo motifs and tā moko as living design languages rather than aesthetic references, and we credit the artists and knowledge holders who inform each project. Selected work spans the Te Haerenga renewable-energy comic for Orion NZ, the Takitimu bilingual graphic novel, character design for the Mad Maggie / Apex Legends cultural consultancy, the Māui card-game illustrations, and toi Māori design for Barnardos Whare Manaaki. Whether the deliverable is a single spread, a full graphic novel, or a system of character and world design, illustrations are produced under Māori creative direction.

Frequently asked

About Māori Illustration

What is toi Māori illustration?
Toi Māori illustration is visual art grounded in Māori design languages — kōwhaiwhai, tukutuku, whakairo motifs, tā moko and pūrākau. It is not a style you can borrow; each element carries whakapapa and requires the right permissions to be used well.
Can you produce illustration for te reo Māori books and comics?
Yes — we regularly illustrate te reo Māori and bilingual comics, graphic novels and educational books, and can pair illustration with reo consultation and typesetting.
Do you take commercial illustration commissions?
Yes — editorial, brand, packaging, character design, gaming and cultural-institution illustration. Every commission includes an upfront kōrero about the kaupapa, permissions and rights.
