Project Overview

The Māui Studios Showreel is a self-produced brand film that gathers the studio's collaborative body of work into a single piece dedicated to celebrating powerful moments of indigenous storytelling. Rather than a conventional portfolio cut, the reel is a deliberate public articulation of the studio's kaupapa - honouring whakapapa, cultural identity, and the voices of rangatahi - and a tribute to the talent, communities, and indigenous leaders whose stories sit at the heart of every project.

The reel is structured around the storytelling moments themselves. It positions tikanga and cultural continuity as the foundations of success (1:35-1:46), and reminds viewers that ancestral connection is not a backdrop but an active inheritance to be carried forward so that future generations do not lose track of their roots (2:28-2:33). It frames the work as a celebration of collective effort: the studio's belief that Kiwi innovation and ingenuity, grounded in indigenous values, can reach global scale when carried by unity and shared purpose (0:59-1:12, 2:01-2:06). It closes as a tribute to the talented individuals and indigenous leaders - locally and globally - who use their voices to lift the mana of others (2:14-2:17, 2:47-2:52).

The core challenge was distilling years of multi-format collaborative work - film, illustration, immersive design, and IP development - into a coherent emotional arc that honours every contributor without flattening the projects into a generic showreel. The reel needed to read as a tribute, not a sizzle: a piece that elevates the mana of the talent and indigenous leaders featured while still functioning as a marketing and proposal asset.

Outcomes

Māui Studios produced a brand film built around a whakapapa-led narrative spine - tikanga, cultural continuity, collective impact, and empowerment - with each theme anchored to a specific moment in the cut so the messaging reads clearly across viewings. Prior project footage was re-graded into a single visual language, bilingual on-screen treatments were authored to sit inside the studio's existing identity, and voice-over and music were chosen to lift rather than overlay the imagery.

The reel delivered a public-facing celebration of indigenous storytelling that now functions across three roles simultaneously: a brand asset for social and web, a tribute to the talent and indigenous leaders the studio has worked alongside, and a proof asset for proposals and procurement. Beyond its immediate release, the showreel has become a reference piece for the studio's storytelling thesis - that holding fast to culture and tikanga is itself the path to success - and a repeatable framework the studio can update as the body of work grows.

Impact Metrics

Intended Outcomes

  • Publicly celebrate powerful moments of indigenous storytelling drawn from across the studio's collaborative body of work
  • Honour and elevate the talent, collaborators, and indigenous leaders featured across the studio's projects
  • Strengthen the connection between rangatahi audiences and whakapapa-led narrative
  • Position the studio's body of work as a coherent, kaupapa-driven portfolio for prospective clients and funders

Broader Impact
