Deliverables

  • 20+ minute immersive VR / MR animated experience
  • First-person narrative structure with user as participant and witness
  • Storyworld centred on Io, Tāne, and Whiro - a mythic arc of conflict, transformation, and restoration
  • Full production pipeline: illustrated concept, animatics, narrated sequences, motion-captured 3D characters, interactive gameplay, orchestral score, spatial sound
  • Built in Unreal Engine and delivered as an immersive showcase

Outcome

A showcase-ready proof of concept for immersive indigenous storytelling - combining high-end real-time production methods with symbolic narrative to demonstrate immersive technology used for culturally resonant, emotionally powerful storytelling rather than simulation.

Project Overview

Mythic Tāne is a 20+ minute immersive VR / mixed-reality animated experience that places participants inside a mythic cosmological conflict shaped by creation, divine rivalry, and the pursuit of higher knowledge. Set within a world forged by Io, the story follows Tāne as he ascends through symbolic realms to retrieve the knowledge of the heavens and restore balance to a fractured cosmos, while his brother Whiro sends dark forces to sabotage the journey.

Designed as a first-person immersive story experience, the project positions the user as both witness and catalyst: rather than watching events from a distance, participants move through narrative environments, encounter symbolic challenges, and influence progression through interaction - an approach that aligns with evidence that immersive virtual reality is especially well suited to experiences prioritising active engagement and experiential depth (Conrad et al., 2024). Built in Unreal Engine, the experience unifies illustrated concept development, storyboarded animatics, narrated sequences, motion-captured 3D characters, interactive gameplay, orchestral scoring, and spatial sound design into a single real-time pipeline.

The central challenge was translating a mythological narrative of cosmic scale into an immersive format that stayed emotionally resonant, visually legible, and structurally coherent for participants moving through it in first person - making symbolic and metaphysical ideas experientially understandable without flattening them into exposition.

SOW Snapshot

Key Deliverables: A 20+ minute immersive VR / MR animated experience; a first-person narrative structure with the user as both participant and witness; a storyworld centred on Io, Tāne, and Whiro and a mythic arc of conflict, transformation, and restoration; a full production pipeline (illustrated concept development, storyboarded animatics, narrated sequences, motion-captured 3D characters, interactive gameplay, orchestral score, spatial sound); built in Unreal Engine and delivered as an immersive showcase.

Audience: Immersive-media and cultural-storytelling audiences; exhibition and showcase environments; education and public-engagement contexts; future partners interested in mythology-driven interactive IP.

Format: Immersive VR / MR real-time experience.

Timeframe: 52-week development.

Service Connection: AR, VR and XR, Immersive Design, Virtual Production, Motion Capture, Visual Design, IP Creation and Story Development, Cultural Storytelling.

Outcomes

Māui Studios approached Mythic Tāne as an immersive mythic journey rather than a conventional short film, using Unreal Engine's real-time capabilities to place participants inside symbolic environments where interaction, movement, sound, and narrative escalation work together. Rather than assembling the production elements as separate outputs, the studio orchestrated them to reinforce one another - visual language, pacing, character performance, participant agency, and score and spatial sound all unified by real-time rendering in service of the mythic arc.

The result is a compelling model for how indigenous mythology, animation, and immersive technology can be woven into a single first-person experience. Its strongest differentiator is the way it combines high-end real-time production methods with symbolic storytelling: not just a VR environment or an animated sequence, but a fully integrated narrative system where world-building, performance, music, sound, and interaction serve the story. In doing so it demonstrates immersive technology used for culturally resonant, emotionally powerful storytelling rather than simulation or technical demonstration (UNESCO, 2025).

Impact Metrics

Intended Outcomes

  • Create a 20+ minute immersive mythological experience that positions the participant as both witness and catalyst
  • Use VR / MR to deepen emotional and symbolic engagement rather than to demonstrate technology
  • Demonstrate a robust real-time pipeline integrating concept art, animation, motion capture, gameplay, music, and spatial sound
  • Establish a high-value proof of concept for future immersive indigenous storytelling IP

Broader Impact

  • Demonstrates a model for immersive indigenous mythology that bridges animation, game design, and cinematic storytelling
  • Expands the role of immersive technology beyond simulation into symbolic narrative experience
  • Creates a showcase-ready proof of concept supporting future educational, exhibition, and public-engagement applications (UNESCO, 2025)

Future Opportunities

  • Expand the project into a longer-form interactive mythic series with additional deity arcs, realms, and symbolic environments
  • Exhibition, museum, or cultural-showcase versions of the experience
  • Companion formats - desktop interactive experiences, 360° cinematic versions, and educational adaptations
  • Extension of the pipeline into future Unreal Engine-driven immersive IP
  • Positioning the work as a flagship example of indigenous immersive storytelling
