Māori Animation

Māui Studios is a Māori animation studio working across 2D, 3D, motion, real-time and Unreal Engine pipelines. Our animation practice is built on kaupapa Māori foundations — pūrākau are held by their story owners, character design honours whakapapa, and toi Māori (kōwhaiwhai, tā moko, tukutuku, whakairo motifs) is applied by mandated artists rather than borrowed as decoration. We animate for education, iwi communications, cultural institutions, games, immersive experiences and virtual marae. Selected work includes the Oraka Aparima cluster, Mythic Tāne VR storytelling, the Fortnite Virtual Marae for Ko Māui Hangarau, and the Power Up haerenga interactive series. Whether the deliverable is a broadcast animation, a real-time avatar for a virtual space, or an educational sequence embedded in a comic, the animation is produced under Māori creative direction from concept to delivery.

Frequently asked

About Māori Animation

What does 'Māori animation' mean in practice?
It means the story, characters, motifs and te reo are led by Māori creatives with mandated cultural authority — not just Māori themes overlaid on a Western pipeline. Toi Māori design elements are applied by artists with the whakapapa or permission to use them.
What animation pipelines do you use?
2D frame-by-frame, 2D rigged animation, 3D character and environment work, real-time Unreal Engine animation for virtual production and immersive experiences, and stylised motion for education and brand.
Do you animate te reo Māori content?
Yes — te reo Māori, bilingual and English-language animation. We work with reo consultants on script, lip-sync and subtitles.
