Te Ao Matihiko Master Brand Tohu
Te Ao Matihiko
A master brand tohu unifying three kaupapa - Te Hapori Matihiko, Te Matarau, and Te Pae Tawhiti - into one culturally grounded, future-facing identity that positions Māori as fundamental players in Aotearoa's digital sector.

Role
Deliverables
- Master brand tohu and visual identity direction
- Conceptual narrative framework binding three kaupapa into one whakapapa
- Facilitated wānanga sessions with the Te Ao Matihiko leadership
- Cross-platform application guidance - social, digital, and print
- Colour system: Matihiko Pink, Matihiko Purple, Matihiko Red, and Pō / Black
Outcome
A recognisable, culturally authoritative master brand that unifies three kaupapa streams into one coherent visual narrative - a living digital whakapapa expressed through a manaia-kaitiaki tohu, a confident wordmark, and a versatile colour system.
Project Overview
Te Ao Matihiko is a kaupapa that amalgamates Te Hapori Matihiko, Te Matarau, and Te Pae Tawhiti - three streams of mahi working to establish Māori as fundamental players in Aotearoa's digital sector. The brief was to build a master brand that could hold all three under one whakapapa without flattening their distinct kaupapa.
The challenge was twofold: a tohu strong enough to act as a standalone mark on social and digital, and a system flexible enough to extend across the three guiding principles - Hapori (digital community), Matarau (many faces, voices), and Tawhiti (the distant horizon). The conceptual driver - "same fabric, new frequency" - reframes the binary 1s and 0s of digital space as manaia-kaitiaki, interlinked guardians holding the kupenga (the network) together.
SOW Snapshot
Core Deliverables: Master brand tohu (manaia-kaitiaki lockup), wordmark, supporting pattern system, four-colour palette (Matihiko Pink #D82F91, Matihiko Purple #2D123E, Matihiko Red #E11E26, Pō / Black #000208), application guidance across social feeds, episode artwork, business cards, and stamps.
Cultural Foundation: Binary as kupenga - reframing 1s and 0s as manaia-kaitiaki, interlinked guardians of digital space. Whakapapa anchors: Io Matua Kore at the source, Te Hapori Matihiko, Te Matarau, and Te Pae Tawhiti as the three pou.
Audience: Māori in tech, iwi digital leads, government and industry stakeholders shaping Aotearoa's digital future.
Format: Master brand identity system delivered across digital-first applications with print extensions.
Service Connection: Brand Identity, Cultural Brand Strategy, Visual Design, Strategic Communication.
Outcomes
The resulting identity carries three guiding principles in one fabric:
01 · Hapori - Te Hapori Matihiko
Digital community. Connecting tāngata across the motu - weaving relationships through the digital kupenga.
10 · Matarau - Te Matarau
Many faces, voices. Indigenous perspectives at the centre - a multiplicity of voices shaping the digital future.
11 · Tawhiti - Te Pae Tawhiti
The distant horizon. A forward-thinking Aotearoa - building legacy for generations yet to come.
The tohu reads as both a stylised "10" (binary) and a pair of manaia-kaitiaki holding the kupenga together - a mark that is unmistakably Māori and unmistakably digital.
Impact Metrics
Intended Outcomes
- A master brand strong enough to hold three kaupapa under one whakapapa without flattening any
- A tohu that works as a standalone social-feed mark and as a full lockup
- A colour system distinctive in Aotearoa's tech landscape - pink, purple, red, and Pō black
- Application across episode artwork, social tiles, business cards, and stamped collateral
Broader Impact
- Positions Te Ao Matihiko as a recognisable platform for Māori voices in the digital realm
- Models cultural brand identity for Māori tech kaupapa - moving past generic "Māori-coded" gradients toward narrative-led marks
- Strengthens the case that Aotearoa's digital sector needs Māori frameworks, not just Māori imagery, embedded in its identity systems (MBIE, 2022; NZTech, 2024)
Future Opportunities
- Episode and series artwork extending the tohu across long-form content
- Sub-brand systems for each of the three pou (Hapori, Matarau, Tawhiti)
- Motion versions of the tohu - binary-to-manaia transformations for digital and broadcast
- Type and pattern extensions for event collateral, signage, and merchandise
- A living brand guidelines resource that evolves alongside the kaupapa
